Articulatory Phonology, Task Dynamics and Computational Adequacy

چکیده

This paper discusses articulatory phonology and task dynamics as potentially computationally adequate models which, together, might characterise speech production. The idea is introduced that, particularly at the task dynamic level, the object oriented computational paradigm is appropriate — this is a novel approach in speech production modelling. The paper concludes that articulatory phonology and task dynamics are a step toward computational adequacy, but that that goal is not quite reached. ___________________________________________________________________________

Towards a Computational Articulatory Model of Spanish Phonology

Many aspects of Spanish phonology remain poorly described within feature-based frameworks, in part because it is not well understood to what extent phonological features are grounded in the phonetic domain. In this paper, we introduce a computational model of Spanish phonology based on articulatory primitives (Browman & Goldstein 1992) that is currently being developed as an extension of the Ta...

Prosody and Movement in American Sign Language: A Task-Dynamics Approach

This study examines prosody in American Sign Language using the theoretical framework of articulatory phonology, which proposes that the basic units of speech are articulatory gestures. We hypothesize that articulatory gestures are also the structural primitives of sign, and we are investigating what the gestures are and how they are timed. Kinematic data are collected as ASL users produce targ...

Frontiers and Challenges in Ar

Browman and Goldstein have outlined an account of the cognitive representation of words in which phonological and phonetic specification is isomorphic [see e.g. 1, 2]. Their Articulatory Phonology framework examines the hypothesis that linguistically significant vocal tract constrictions, or gestures, are the atomic units of phonological representation. And, using Saltzman’s Task Dynamics model...

Structural Representation and Matching of Articulatory Speech Structures based on the Evolving Transformation System (ETS) Formalism

A formal structural representation of speech consistent with the principles of combinatorial structure theory is presented in this paper. The representation is developed within the Evolving Transformation System (ETS) formalism and encapsulates speech processes at the articulatory level. We show how the class structure of several consonantal phonemes of English can be expressed with the help of...

Spatio-temporal articulatory movement primitives during speech production: extraction, interpretation, and validation.

This paper presents a computational approach to derive interpretable movement primitives from speech articulation data. It puts forth a convolutive Nonnegative Matrix Factorization algorithm with sparseness constraints (cNMFsc) to decompose a given data matrix into a set of spatiotemporal basis sequences and an activation matrix. The algorithm optimizes a cost function that trades off the misma...
